Chiltern Film Society - May 2019
Those Darling Buds of May!
Our 50th Season comes to a close with, as usual, a mixed bag of films - responses have varied from thumbs up to blowing raspberries. Our favourite three films of the Season were Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
and The Divine Order and A Fantastic Woman - the less said about The Firemen’s Ball and Western the better!
We’re sitting down now with a long list of suggestions in order to create the next Season. It’s an arduous job, fraught with frustration at times, as there are a myriad of issues to contend with. Finally, though, a programme of 15 films will be arrived at within the next few weeks which, hopefully, will be on a par with the three mentioned above. We’ll let you know as soon as we can...
What is interesting, though, is purely by coincidence - or is it? - that our three most popular films of the Season feature stories from a woman’s perspective.
Three Billboards won Oscars for lead actress and supporting actor. A story about a mother’s courage and determination in the face of hostility as she tries to find to daughter’s killer.
A death of her boyfriend sparks the plot of A Fantastic Woman, the superb transgender drama from Chile.
Whereas The Divine Order is a Swiss film about women simply wanting the vote in 1971. Funny and annoying in equal measure.
Three films that, if you haven’t seen them, certainly come highly recommended!
